The Light at the End of the Tunnel

There is light at the end of the tunnel, though no one knows how long or dark it might be. In the midst of such uncertainty, Your faithfulness will always light the way.

I have a love/hate relationship with the expression, “there is light at the end of the tunnel”. Well-meaning folks use this phrase to offer comfort and hope to those who find themselves in a dark place, with no foreseeable idea of what the future might hold.

I found myself in the “tunnel” about eight years ago. I was in a relationship and expecting a child. Suddenly, I became ill and the doctors were concerned for the baby’s life. I was hospitalized for little over a week before doctors came in for an emergency c-section. My 1 lb 8 oz baby came three months prematurely and after 16 days in the NICU, my little girl couldn’t hold on any longer.

An exhausting week of funeral arrangements followed, along with having to navigate family dynamics. A few days later I went through a break up. And days after that, I moved in with my mom; the thought of being alone in my apartment after losing what felt like everything added to my injury.

In just weeks, my world had been flipped completely upside down. I was physically drained, had not yet healed from the surgery and my heart was completely shattered. For the first time in my life, there I was inside the infamous tunnel, with no visible sign of light.

Today, I find myself on the light side of that story, and over the next few blog posts, I will be sharing how the previous tunnel has shed light on my perspective so I can find light in present moments of quiet darkness.

If you find yourself in your own period of waiting, brokenness or uncertainty, take heart.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, though no one knows how long or dark it might be. In the midst of such uncertainty, God’s faithfulness will always light the way.
