"Stay" Song Story & First Performance

Writer: N RuizN Ruiz

The last song in the EP, Glimpse of Glory, is "Stay". The song was written at an Uproar songwriting retreat in Glenn Rose, Texas, on April 28, 2018. The video below captures the song story and the first time we presented the song to the songwriting group. Take a listen.

It is amazing how a song can take on a different life as lyrics are fleshed out and as instruments are incorporated. On the mastered version of the song, James Montgomery used the cajon to bring something special to the song and give it a fun groove.

As mentioned in the video, the inspiration of the song came from experiences Sergio Estrada, the co-writer of the song, witnessed as a child in church. People came to his parents with all kinds of needs, and the only thing he saw could restore those needs was the presence of God.

The message in "Stay" is two-fold. First, it highlights that if we draw near to God, He will also draw near to us (James 4:6). Because He is omnipresent (Jeremiah 23:24), we can easily call on Him at any time and His presence is always there (Jeremiah 33:3). He loves those who love Him (Proverbs 8:17) and those who seek Him will find Him (Deuteronomy 4:29). Revelation 3:20 says "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me."

Second, the song highlights the many things we can find in His presence. Psalm 16:11 says "You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy". There is cleansing and purification in His presence (James 4:8). We find fruit (John 15:5), comfort (Psalm 23:4), rest (Exodus 33:14), peace (Isaiah 26:3), transformation of our minds (Romas 12:2), freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17-18), renewal (Psalm 51:10), and the list goes on. "Stay" is a call to stay in His presence, for there we will find everything we need.

On a similar note, we are just a few days from Christmas Day, and I wanted to take this time to wish you a "Merry Christmas". I pray that as you listen to "Stay" you are reminded that God is with us!
