Road Trip

Writer: N RuizN Ruiz

Just today, I arrived from my first road trip... ever. I intentionally mapped out a 2,765 miles-route, rented a car and drove to places I've never been to before. We traveled from Fort Worth to Amarillo, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico through Arizona, stopping at the Grand Canyon before heading to Las Vegas, Nevada. There we stopped and rested before heading to stunning Moab, Utah (pictured below) through the mountains in Colorado, alongside the Colorado River, until we reached Pueblo to rest before heading back to Fort Worth.

This trip is part of a series of travel decisions I've made in the spur of the moment over the last year. The madness started last year for my mom's birthday. For decades, she begged me to take her on a cruise, but I always found an excuse as to why I could not go. I had an epiphany and realized my mother is not getting younger (and neither am I), and I finally made a decision to go and make memories with her. Our seven-day cruise to Alaska exposed us to things we never imagined seeing, and personally marked me.

This is exactly what happened when I first went to church. For years, she begged me to take her, and the day I did, that same day I had an encounter with God that changed my life forever.

I realize I am a safe, monotonous person. I thrive in planning, routines and schedules. And while those things are not inherently bad, they often keep me from experiencing new things. The two aforementioned examples show that when I step out, the things I experience tend to have a great impact in my life.

If you are anything like me, on a quest to find evidence of God's presence, here are two tips. First, envision life as a road trip. It is a long journey that takes you through deserts, valleys, mountains, rivers, and all kinds of terrains and seasons. You'll find that even the most dry, hot, deserted places are filled with beauty.

Last, I encourage you to step out, take a risk and do something out of the norm. "Sometimes you have to swim outside your comfort zone to catch the wave that will change your life" (Flirting with Forty).
