Focus on the Family

I am obsessed with researching word definitions. I blame my English literature teacher in college who insisted we highlight words in our readings we did not understand and search their definition. English is my second language, so as you can imagine, I spent a lot of time highlighting words I did not understand.

Today’s focus is on asking God to restore families. Below are a few ways Dictionary.com defines the word “restore”:

  • to bring back into existence, use, or the like; reestablish: to restore order.

  • to bring back to a former, original, or normal condition

  • to bring back to a state of health, soundness, or vigor.

  • to put back to a former place, or to a former position, rank, etc.

During my prayer time, I was asking God to give me names of families in need of restoration. I challenge you to ask God to give you names as well, and when He does, take time to pray for them. Our families need it.

More than individual families, we also ought to pray for the restoration of the family in general. We live in a time when organizations and movements are working intentionally to destroy the nuclear family. This makes me sad as there has been no other time in history with more single parent households as today.

You can read the statistics for yourself, but here is one to consider. According to a Pew Research Center analysis, “30% of solo mothers and their families are living in poverty compared with 17% of solo father families and 16% of families headed by a cohabiting couple.” The same analysis also highlights that only 8% of married couple families live in poverty.

We all know that living in poverty impacts families in many ways, and especially in areas, such as education and health. We must pray and fight against ideologies that destroy the families and prevents parents and children from reaching their God-given potential and achieving the American Dream.

As the definitions suggest, we must reestablish order, bring our families back to state of health and put them in their rightful position. “If one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
